Amorphis’s debut album is a classic example of early Finnish death metal. The Karelian Isthmus presents the band in a much more raw and brutal form than on later releases – dominated by heavy, dark riffs, deep growls, and an atmosphere inspired by both death metal and Nordic history. However, even at this stage, the band’s signature melodies and inspirations from the mythology and history of the Karelian region are evident.

The 1992 album became an important reference point for the Scandinavian metal scene and heralded the further evolution of Amorphis’s style towards more melodic and progressive forms.
