Schröttersburg – Melancholia LP

Schröttersburg is a band from Płock, formed in 2008. They have been active in their current lineup since 2011. Initially, the group operated primarily within the realms of post-punk, new wave, cold wave, and noise rock, yet from the start, they declared a wide range of influences—spanning from krautrock, industrial, and punk to dub, free jazz, and improvised music. Interestingly, the musicians have noted that many of their tracks originate through improvisation: playing, experimenting, and selecting the best fragments.

The band’s debut release was the demo *Demencje*, followed in 2015 by their first album, *Krew*. That record already showcased their signature raw, minimalist sound, the industrial atmosphere of Płock, and lyrics balancing between surrealism, the macabre, and poetic manifesto.

Subsequent years brought a distinct evolution. Schröttersburg gradually moved away from the simpler post-punk song structure toward increasingly experimental, psychedelic, and trance-like forms. Their discography grew to include releases such as *Ciało*, *Melancholia*, *Dalet*, *Melancholia. Dekonstrukcje*, and *Om Shanti Om*.

*Melancholia* is Schröttersburg’s third full-length album, originally released in 2018. The edition presented here was released on transparent vinyl by Hidden Beauty and 161 Crew on September 14, 2023.

It is an album that clearly showcases the band’s characteristic blend of post-punk, punk, and new wave. At the same time, Schröttersburg does not limit itself to a nostalgic recreation of 1980s sounds; the raw guitar work, driving rhythms, and dark atmosphere are filtered through the band’s own, more experimental musical language.

*Melancholia* is crucial for understanding the group’s subsequent direction. It was during this period that their interest in more expansive, trance-like structures emerged—elements that would later resonate strongly on *Om Shanti Om* and *Kosmogonia*. In later releases, the band would increasingly boldy blend their post-punk foundation with atonality, psychedelia, industrial, and noise.
