BRUTAL TRUTH “Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom” 2xLP (Splatter)

Brutal Truth is one of the most important bands in the history of American grindcore. Formed in New York in 1990 by bassist Dan Lilker—formerly of Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, and Stormtroopers of Death—the group combined extreme metal with punk aggression and experimentation from the very beginning, establishing itself as a key figure in the American grindcore scene of the 1990s.

Their debut album, *Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses*, was released in 1992 via Earache Records and quickly drew attention to Brutal Truth as one of the most uncompromising bands of the new grindcore wave.

Their second major release was 1994’s *Need to Control*. It was during this period that the band began to experiment more heavily with song structure, without sacrificing extreme speed or aggression.

After switching labels to Relapse Records, they released *Kill Trend Suicide* in 1996. A year later, Brutal Truth released *Sounds of the Animal Kingdom*—their third full-length album and one of the most significant releases in the band’s history.

Brutal Truth disbanded for the first time in 1999. The band returned in 2006 and subsequently recorded albums such as *Evolution Through Revolution*, *End Time*, and *The Axiom of Post Inhumanity*.

The album *Sounds of the Animal Kingdom* was released on September 23, 1997, via Relapse Records. The material was recorded in June 1997 at Baby Monster Studios in New York, with Billy Anderson handling production, mixing, and some of the engineering work.

This is a distinctive album, as Brutal Truth moves away from the simple “maximum speed and maximum brutality” formula. While grindcore remains the foundation, the band also incorporates elements of death metal, hardcore, crust punk, doom, industrial, and experimental rock. The album runs for over 74 minutes, an immense duration for grindcore. It features everything from very short, seconds-long bursts to much more elaborate passages.

This is a new 2026 reissue, released again by Relapse Records.
