DEFEATED SANITY “Chronicles of Lunacy” LP Gatefold

For nearly three decades, the underground scene has been obsessed with Defeated Sanity. The band is highly acclaimed for blending old-school death metal with jazz-infused chaos and a level of technical precision worthy of a classical composer. However, when this quartet of madmen began planning their seventh album, they decided to dial back the complex musical puzzles and return to pure, neck-snapping intensity.

“Chronicles of Lunacy” is by no means a “dumbed-down” version of Defeated Sanity. Founding member Lille Gruber never lets up—whether he’s crushing everything with blast beats or darting lightning-fast across his cymbals, as heard on the lead single, “The Odour of Sanctity.” Yet, the record marks a clear return to the band’s brutal roots. Its concept revolves around the twisted ways in which delusions and false beliefs can warp the human mind.
“Alienation breeds relentless hatred,” growls Josh Welshman from the depths of his gut, while bassist Jacob Schmidt fills out the sound with massive, gravity-defying strikes.

To recapture the raw, low-end-heavy tone of the fan-favorite album “Psalms of the Moribund,” the band headed to The Thousand Caves studio in January 2024 to work with producer Colin Marston. The track “Accelerate the Rot” has become the fastest and most relentless piece in their repertoire—thanks to new guitarist Vaughn Stoffey, whose terrifying, pig-squeal-like dissonances cut through like a rusted butcher’s knife.
