The first reissue since its original release in 1998! Remastered artwork, utilizing the original sources. Grief’s third album after the genre-defining “Come to Grief” and “Miserably Ever After”! A classic sludgecore masterpiece!!! Grief. Such power in one word. And such a perfect word for this band’s name. Nothing describes this music better. For those unfamiliar with Sludge’s sound, it’s the definition of grief expressed through noise. First, take a look at the album cover – a void that seems like a portal, and a decaying torso floating within it. Whoever this man is is now unrecognizable – his head has exploded from the sounds of Sludge. After listening to this album, you could be that man. But for those familiar with Grief’s earlier material, this is going to be one hell of a ride, so pack a beer, a bong, and let’s get listening. The album opens with the instrumental “I Hate Lucy,” which is [presumably] a reference to the TV series “I Love Lucy.” It begins with a slow riff that immediately hooks any doom fan. Grief hasn’t lost its dark, doom sound and definitely still has its sludge character. Shredding guitars, thundering bass, drums that sound like war elephants charging at you. It’s the perfect album opener and a great start. After seven and a half minutes of intense harassment, “Polluted” kicks in, picking up the pace and adding energy. The riffs are still incredibly psychedelic and should please anyone who enjoys recreational drug use. “If there’s life in space, take me out of here. Take me out—I’ll volunteer; it can’t be worse than here. They’re watching you constantly—every minute, crime. Rape, murder, theft, fraud—the Church is a fraud, just like God.” This album ranks right up there with “Come To Grief,” “Dopethrone,” “Stash,” and “Take as Needed for Pain.” This album is truly a gritty sludge. Slow-paced, thunderous, and loud. It’s mean as hell, but it works.
