MAYHEM “Chimera” LP Gatefold

“Chimera” is one of the most aggressive and direct albums in Mayhem’s discography. Here, the Norwegian black metal pioneers combine an icy atmosphere with abrupt tempo shifts, technical drumming, and sharp, dissonant riffs. Maniac’s distinctive vocals lend the music an exceptionally expressive, unsettling dimension, while the production retains a raw edge without sacrificing the clarity of the instrumentation. It is a work in which classic black metal aesthetics meet more complex arrangements and unadulterated brutality.

Formed in Norway in 1984, Mayhem stands as one of the most significant bands of the second wave of black metal. Their history and their albums—most notably “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”—played a pivotal role in shaping the Norwegian scene. “Chimera,” originally released in 2004, presents the band in a more technical and aggressive light, all while preserving the dark essence of their body of work.
